Resume help for hopeful new teacher please?
I will be going to a job fair on Saturday here in Atlanta to hopefully find a job for the 2006/2007 school year in my county I live in. I have spent 10 years in the corporate world, and want to make a career change to become an elementary school teacher. I have taken the certification tests required. What do you suggest that I put on my resume, and how should I dress for the job fair. Should I arrive early, mid-day, or towards the end of the day? Any help would be greatly appreciated...thank you! Even though i'm in the corporate world right now, the teachers in the county that I want to teach in make $10,000 more than what I make right now. I asked and they do have teaching opportunities right now, even with school starting so soon.

- is the teacher pay enough for you after you've been in the corporate world? And, there are security issues...and teachers are put where they are needed. Here it's August and in a day or so school will start so I'd think it would be too late to apply to teach for this year, but, you might get lucky. To apply to teach here in our county there is an online application, and 78 more teachers are still needed here. For a teaching job you dress conservatively. I don't know of any teachers these days dressing up in a suit. However if you are applying at a job fair you probably would need to wear a conservative suit. Always arrive early to a job fair as these days the hall might be packed as the day goes on. Bring a few different kinds of resumes. Probably none would be for teaching unless that job fair is that they are looking only for teachers.
- There are a number of good sites on the web offering articles about career changes. If you know how elementary school teachers dress in Atlanta, go with that unless it is too casual. Generally business casual will present well, but a more business dress approach will cover you if you decide to talk with another business that requires higher dress standards.
- Send me your resume, I will look at it. If it needs to be adjusted. I will do and send it back to you.
- Whenever attending any type of job fair, you want to make yourself standout so that potential employers will remember you. That means you need to look your best. Dress the same way that you would if your were attending a job fair for a Fortune 500 company. For women, it's best to wear a dress suit instead of a pantsuit on the first interview. Your resume should highlight any qualifications that you have that will cross-over into the teaching world. For instance, do you have any corporate training experience, public speaking skills, software experience? Have you ever worked with children (volunteer experience, if any, can also be included)? You may also want to highlight any educational courses (and certifications) that you have taken that show you are qualified for the position. Good luck!!!
