When finding work up a slope, do you use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the distance?

I've seen some questions on work, but up an angled slope. Now, I'm wondering if you use the Pythagorean Theorem (a squared plus b squared equalig c squared, c being the hypotenuse, and a and b being the other two legs) to determine the distance over the work is done. Do you?
