Is it possible to network without broadcasting that you are looking for a job?

This sounds like the biggest oxymoron question I can imagine, but I am very serious. Last year, I got a new job that I like, but that is a LOT of work for low pay. I have since decided that I want a complete career change and I want to move to a new field. I want to work at a college instead of at a public school. Everyone says that the best way to get a new job is to network and spread the word that you are looking for a job in whatever field you want to get into. The problem is, my current job has a lot of partnerships with the colleges that I would be trying to network at. Therefore, I don't want to be spreading the word to everyone that I am looking for a job because then it will put my current job in jeopardy. Is there a way to kind of "secretly network"? Or is it an all-or-nothing kind of thing?

  1. yes it is
  2. When times are tough you may have to do that but that works against the honest Joe that is prepared to go the employment agency process. If you are already employed and the person you are competing against is not and he or has a young family then of course it is not really o.k.
